Charlie Hebdo

Dear Mom and Dad,

Just letting you know I am fine. I don't know if you've heard about the shootings in the Charlie Hebdo office. On Wednesday night in Paris 12 people were killed and many injured at a popular newspaper company, Charlie Hebdo. The newspaper had been publishing comics depicting Mohammad, something the Muslim religion strongly opposed. Three men, Muslim Extremist have been pegged as suspects. It happened really close to my apartment but I was miles away in Beduer on holiday. All of France is in uproar, people are protesting this act of terrorism all over France. The event has not impeded Charlie Hebdo's publications, their next issue comes out this Wednesday. I think it is good that they continue printing, it sends the message that France is a strong, independent country. I am worried that the whole French-Muslim population will suffer though, already there has been at least five reported anti-musilim assaults, and I believe many more will come. Although it is possible that publishing the comics was not the nicest thing to do, it shouldn’t matter. France like America has laws protecting the freedom of speech. Both our countries worked hard to establish this right. People should be able to exercise freedom of speech however they want without fearing attack. France as a whole stands united on this issue and that is crucial in a time like this. Hope all is well in California.

Love,
Zoe
